cimitero
cemetery
noun chee-mee-TEH-roh Rare
Origin: From Latin coemeterium, from Greek koimeterion (sleeping place), from koiman (to put to sleep).
Also means
graveyard
Usage Note
Cimitero is masculine (il cimitero, pl i cimiteri). In Italy, visiting the cemetery on Ognissanti (All Saints' Day, 1 November) is a widespread tradition. Do not confuse with camposanto, a more poetic/literary synonym for cemetery. The 'c' before 'i' is pronounced 'ch': chi-mi-TE-ro.
Examples
"Ogni anno visiamo il cimitero per commemorare i defunti."
Natural Translation
Every year we visit the cemetery to commemorate the deceased.
