Usage Note

Colite is a medical term for inflammation of the colon. In Italian usage it is also used colloquially as a stress-related complaint: mi viene la colite (it gives me colitis) is a hyperbolic way of saying something causes anxiety or irritation. As a noun ending in -ite, it is feminine and its plural is coliti.
