Usage Note
Coma is a masculine noun despite ending in -a — il coma, not la coma — following the pattern of Greek-origin words like il problema and il tema. The plural is i coma (invariable). In medical speech you say essere in coma ('to be in a coma') without an article after in.
Examples
"Il paziente è ancora in coma."
Natural Translation
The patient is still in a coma.
