Comune as adjective means 'common' or 'shared' (interesse comune = 'common interest'). As a masculine noun (il comune) it means 'municipality' or 'town hall' — the basic unit of Italian local government. The plural comuni applies to both. Note the final -e, which does not change for gender: un amico comune / un'amica comune.
