Usage Note

Congedo covers two related meanings: an official leave of absence (congedo parentale — 'parental leave', congedo per malattia — 'sick leave') and a formal or literary farewell. In the military, congedo is also the discharge from service (essere in congedo — 'to be discharged'). The plural is congedi. Do not confuse with licenza, which can also mean 'leave' in certain military or school contexts.
