Coniuge is the formal and legal term for a spouse of either gender; documents use il coniuge for a male spouse and la coniuge for a female spouse, keeping the same form. In everyday speech, Italians say marito ('husband') or moglie ('wife'). The plural coniugi refers to 'the married couple/spouses' and is very common in official and legal language.
