Usage Note

Consentire is slightly more formal than permettere and is common in legal and bureaucratic language. It is followed by a qualcuno di fare ('to allow someone to do something'): gli consento di partire ('I allow him to leave'). It uses avere as its auxiliary in compound tenses.
