Origin: From Latin contrahens, present participle of contrahere (to contract, draw together).
Usage Note
Contraente is used almost exclusively in legal and commercial language to describe a party entering into a contract: la parte contraente (the contracting party). It can also function as a noun: i contraenti (the contracting parties). The form is invariable for gender: il contraente, la contraente.
