Controverso describes something that provokes disagreement or debate — a tema controverso (controversial topic). It agrees in gender and number: controversa, controversi, controverse. Less formal alternatives include discusso or dibattuto. Note the 's' between vowels is voiced ('z' sound) in controverso.
