Corazza (f) originally meant a breastplate or suit of armour; today it is also used figuratively for any protective shell or shield — physical (la corazza di una tartaruga = a tortoise's shell) or emotional (costruirsi una corazza = to build a shell around oneself). The plural is regular: corazze.
