dicastero

ministry, government department

noun dee-kah-STEH-roh Rare

Origin: Greek dikaion (right, justice) via ecclesiastical Latin diacasteria

Usage Note

Dicastero refers to a government ministry or, in Vatican usage, a congregation or pontifical body. In Italian civil administration it is synonymous with ministero; in Vatican context — e.g. Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede — the term is preferred over ministero. The plural is regular: i dicasteri.

Examples

"Il dicastero ha approvato il nuovo regolamento."

Natural Translation

The ministry approved the new regulation.
