Dietrofront comes from the military command 'about turn' (dietro, 'behind' + front, 'front'). It is invariable (plural: i dietrofront) and masculine. Figuratively it means a complete reversal of position: fare un dietrofront ('to do a U-turn'). It is very common in political journalism.
