Discapito is almost exclusively used in the fixed phrase a discapito di (to the detriment of, at the expense of): ha scelto la velocità a discapito della qualità (he chose speed at the expense of quality). It has no common standalone use outside this prepositional phrase and is therefore a formal/written register word.
