equità

equity

noun eh-kwee-TAH Rare

Origin: Latin aequitas (evenness, fairness)

Also means

fairness

Usage Note

Equità is an invariable noun. In Italian law, giudizio di equità is a ruling based on fairness rather than strict rule; in everyday use it simply means impartiality. Do not confuse it with uguaglianza (equality) — equità implies proportional rather than identical treatment.

Examples

"Il giudice ha deciso in base all'equità."

Natural Translation

The judge decided on the basis of equity.
