Origin: From Latin exilium, from exul (banished person).
Usage Note
Esilio can be involuntary banishment by political authority or voluntary self-imposed exile. The verb is esiliare (to exile). A common phrase is andare in esilio (to go into exile) or vivere in esilio (to live in exile). The person exiled is an esiliato (noun/adjective). Contrast with relegazione which implies a more judicial form of internal exile.
