Usage Note

Esternamente means 'on the outside' or 'from the outside' and contrasts with internamente (internally). It is used in both literal contexts (verniciato esternamente, painted on the outside) and figurative ones (esternamente sembrava calmo, outwardly he seemed calm). It is invariable.
