Eterno is used both in religious contexts (vita eterna = eternal life) and informally to mean something that seems to go on forever (un'attesa eterna = an endless wait). The noun l'eterno can mean eternity or God. The phrase in eterno means 'forever'. Do not confuse with immortale (immortal), which refers to living beings.
