Usage Note

Extracomunitario literally means 'from outside the European Community' — coined as a bureaucratic/legal term. In contemporary Italian it is often used colloquially (and sometimes pejoratively) to mean any non-white immigrant, regardless of actual citizenship. Learners should be aware of this charged connotation; neutral alternatives include straniero (foreigner) or cittadino non UE.
