fido

credit line

noun FEE-doh Rare

Origin: Latin fidus (trustworthy)

Also means

bank overdraft facility

Usage Note

Fido in banking means an authorised credit limit granted to a customer — fido bancario (bank credit line). As an adjective it is an archaic or poetic word for 'faithful' (un fido amico), but the modern noun usage dominates in financial Italian. Do not confuse with Fido as a dog's name (also from 'faithful').

Examples

"La banca ha aumentato il suo fido."

Natural Translation

The bank increased his credit line.
