Fungere is always followed by da + a noun: fungere da intermediario ('to act as intermediary'), fungere da guida ('to serve as a guide'). It is an irregular third-conjugation verb with no first-person singular present (io form is avoided; io fungo exists but is extremely rare). The past participle is funto and it takes avere. It is formal; fare da is the everyday equivalent.
