già

already

adverb JAH Common

Also means

yes, indeed

Usage Note

Già signals that something has happened sooner than expected; it usually sits right before the verb, as in sono già arrivati ('they've already arrived'). In replies it works as an emphatic 'yeah, right' agreement, and non... già can soften a contradiction.

Examples

"Ho già finito i compiti."

Natural Translation

I've already finished the homework.

Literal Translation

I-have already finished the homework.
