Usage Note
Inatteso is formed from in- (negative prefix) + atteso (expected, awaited, past participle of attendere). It means something that was not anticipated: una visita inattesa (an unexpected visit). A close synonym is imprevisto (unforeseen), which also functions as a noun (un imprevisto = an unexpected event). The feminine form is inattesa.
