incinto

pregnant

adjective een-CHEEN-toh Rare

Origin: Latin incincta (ungirded, i.e. loosening garments for pregnancy)

Usage Note

Incinto is used almost exclusively in the feminine form incinta to describe a pregnant woman — una donna incinta. The masculine form incinto is technically correct but rarely used. Unlike gravida (more medical) or in dolce attesa (euphemistic), incinta is the standard everyday term.

Examples

"Mia sorella è incinta di tre mesi."

Natural Translation

My sister is three months pregnant.

Literal Translation

My sister is pregnant of three months.
