inciucio

shady political deal; backroom stitch-up

noun een-CHOO-choh Rare

Usage Note

Inciucio originated in Neapolitan dialect and entered mainstream Italian political jargon in the 1990s to describe covert, self-serving deals between ostensibly rival parties. It is always derogatory. The plural is inciuci. The related verb inciuciare means to make such deals. There is no clean English equivalent; 'stitch-up' or 'political fix' comes closest.

Examples

"Il governo è nato da un inciucio tra i partiti."

Natural Translation

The government was born from a backroom deal between parties.
