incoerente

inconsistent

adjective een-koh-eh-REN-teh Rare

Also means

incoherent

Usage Note

Incoerente describes a person, argument, or behavior lacking internal logical consistency. It is a false friend for English speakers: it does NOT mean 'incoherent' in the sense of being hard to understand physically — incomprensibile covers that. Il suo ragionamento è incoerente means his reasoning is self-contradictory. The noun is incoerenza; the antonym is coerente (consistent).

Examples

"Le sue dichiarazioni appaiono incoerenti."

Natural Translation

His statements appear inconsistent.
