Indigente is a formal adjective describing someone in severe poverty; it is used attributively (persona indigente) and as a noun (gli indigenti, the destitute). In legal contexts, non abbiente or indigente qualifies a defendant for state-funded legal aid (patrocinio a spese dello Stato). It is more elevated in register than povero.
