Infortunare is used transitively ('to injure someone') but far more commonly appears as the reflexive infortunarsi ('to get hurt', 'to have an accident'), especially in a workplace context — infortunio sul lavoro means 'workplace injury'. It takes essere as the auxiliary in the reflexive form: si è infortunato ('he got injured'). The related noun is infortunio (accident, mishap).
