io

I

pronoun EE-oh Common

Origin: from Latin 'ego'

Usage Note

Io is the subject pronoun 'I', but it's normally dropped since the verb ending already shows the person; you add it only for emphasis or contrast, as in io pago ('I'll pay'). Unlike English, it is never capitalised unless it starts a sentence.

Examples

"Io preferisco il caffè amaro."

Natural Translation

I prefer bitter coffee.

Literal Translation

I prefer the coffee bitter.
