Usage Note
Kitsch is a loanword from German used unchanged in Italian, referring to art or objects considered gaudy, sentimental, or in poor taste — but sometimes embraced ironically. As an invariable noun it takes the masculine article: il kitsch. It can also function as an invariable adjective: un oggetto kitsch, una decorazione kitsch. It entered wide European usage in the 20th century through art criticism.
