laureare

to confer a degree, to graduate

verb lah-oo-REH-ah-reh Rare

Origin: Latin laureare (to crown with laurel).

Usage Note

Laureare means to award a university degree to someone; the reflexive laurearsi means to graduate: mi sono laureato in legge (I graduated in law). The laurea is Italy's traditional university degree. Auxiliary in laurearsi is essere, so past participle agrees with the subject: si è laureata.

Examples

"Si è laureata in medicina con lode."

Natural Translation

She graduated in medicine with honors.
