Origin: Latin mediterraneus, 'middle of the land' (medius + terra).

Usage Note

Mediterraneo also functions as a noun (il Mediterraneo) to mean the Mediterranean Sea. As an adjective it agrees in gender and number: dieta mediterranea (Mediterranean diet). The masculine plural is mediterranei.
