Usage Note

Migrante is a common-gender noun — the same form serves for male and female (il migrante, la migrante), and the plural is i migranti / le migranti. In Italian political discourse it is often distinguished from immigrato (immigrant, with a sense of permanent settlement) and rifugiato (refugee, with legal status). The word is used both as a noun and an adjective (lavoratori migranti).
