Mossa is the past participle of muovere (to move) used as a feminine noun. In games it means a move (la mossa del cavallo in chess); more broadly it means a strategic step or action (una mossa azzardata, 'a risky move'). The body-language phrase fare le mosse means 'to make gestures/moves'. Do not confuse with la mosca (the fly, the insect).
