musical

musical

noun myoo-ZEE-kahl Rare

Origin: Shortened from English 'musical comedy', adopted as a loanword.

Usage Note

Musical is masculine and invariable in Italian: il musical, i musical (the plural does not add an 's'). It refers specifically to the theatrical genre — Broadway-style shows combining dialogue, song, and dance. The adjective 'musical' meaning 'relating to music' is musicale in Italian — a different word entirely. Learners sometimes confuse the two.

Examples

"Hanno visto un musical a Broadway."

Natural Translation

They saw a musical on Broadway.
