notaio
notary
noun noh-TAH-yoh Rare
Origin: Latin notarius, 'secretary'
Usage Note
Notaio is the Italian civil-law notary — a legally qualified professional who authenticates contracts, deeds, and wills. The role is much more powerful than a common-law notary public; in Italy buying property requires a notaio, not just a solicitor. The feminine form is notaia (modern) or notaio (traditional). Plural: i notai.
Examples
"Dobbiamo firmare il contratto dal notaio."
Natural Translation
We need to sign the contract at the notary's.
