nube

cloud

noun NOO-beh Rare

Origin: From Latin nubes, 'cloud'.

Usage Note

Nube is feminine; plural nubi. It is more literary and meteorological than the everyday nuvola (also f, plural nuvole) — weather reports use nubi or nuvolosità, while a child pointing at the sky says nuvola. Nube tossica ('toxic cloud') and nube vulcanica ('volcanic ash cloud') are standard technical phrases.

Examples

"Una nube scura si avvicina da ovest."

Natural Translation

A dark cloud is approaching from the west.
