oncologo
oncologist
noun on-KOH-loh-goh Rare
Origin: Greek onkos (mass, tumour) + logos (study).
Usage Note
Oncologo (fem. oncologa) is the specialist in oncology (oncologia), the medical field dealing with tumours and cancer. The plural follows the pattern common to Greek-derived words in -go: gli oncologi (not -gos). Do not confuse with ematologo (haematologist). Oncologo is used in formal medical and journalistic Italian, while laypeople may simply say il medico specialista in tumori.
Examples
"L'oncologo ha prescritto una nuova terapia."
Natural Translation
The oncologist prescribed a new therapy.
