Ovest is invariable and used both as a noun and attributive adjective: a ovest (to the west), il vento da ovest (westerly wind), la costa ovest (the west coast). The abbreviation is O on maps. Italian cardinal points are all masculine nouns: nord, sud, est, ovest.
