Origin: Greek patriōtēs, from patris (fatherland).

Usage Note

Patriota is an epicene noun — the same form is used for males and females, distinguished only by the article: il patriota (m), la patriota (f). The masculine plural is i patrioti, not i patriota. In Italian historical usage the word carries strong Risorgimento associations.
