Usage Note

Patteggiamento is the Italian legal procedure whereby a defendant and prosecutor agree on a reduced sentence, similar to a plea bargain. It was introduced into Italian law in 1989 and is formally called applicazione della pena su richiesta delle parti. The verb is patteggiare ('to negotiate a plea deal').
