peggio

worst

noun PEH-joh Rare

Origin: Latin peius (comparative of malus, bad)

Also means

the worst

Usage Note

Peggio is primarily an adverb or indeclinable adjective (stare peggio, to feel worse; è peggio così, it's worse this way), but functions as a masculine noun in the expression il peggio (the worst). The invariable form also serves as the comparative of maleva peggio di ieri (it goes worse than yesterday). Do not confuse with peggiore, which is the regular comparative adjective (il risultato peggiore, the worse result).

Examples

"Il peggio deve ancora venire."

Natural Translation

The worst is yet to come.
