Usage Note

Peperone refers to the sweet bell pepper (Capsicum annuum), not to be confused with il pepe (black pepper the spice) or the American cured meat 'pepperoni' (which in Italian is salame piccante). The plural i peperoni is regular. A common Italian dish is peperonata (stewed peppers).
