perdente

loser

noun adjective per-DEN-teh Less Common

Usage Note

Perdente is both the present participle of perdere (to lose) used as a noun and a standalone adjective meaning 'losing'. As a noun it is epicene — il perdente (male) / la perdente (female) — with plural i/le perdenti. In sports commentary it refers to the losing side; used of a person informally it carries a slightly harsh, dismissive tone similar to English 'loser'.

Examples

"Il perdente ha stretto la mano al vincitore."

Natural Translation

The loser shook the winner's hand.
