Pozzo primarily means a water well dug into the ground, but it extends to oil wells (pozzo petrolifero) and mine shafts. The idiom essere un pozzo di scienza ('to be a well of knowledge') means to be extremely knowledgeable. Do not confuse with bene (the adverb 'well').
