Pretendente has two main meanings: a claimant to a throne or title (il pretendente al trono) and a suitor or person courting someone (un pretendente = a suitor). It is an epicene noun — the same form is used for both sexes (la pretendente, il pretendente) — and is masculine when gender is unspecified.
