Protocollo has several senses: a set of rules or procedures (protocollo medico = medical protocol), a diplomatic agreement (il Protocollo di Kyoto), and — in Italian bureaucracy — a numbered registration stamp on official documents (numero di protocollo = reference number). The plural is i protocolli.
