Usage Note

Protezionismo is the economic-policy doctrine of shielding domestic industries from foreign competition through tariffs and quotas. Its adjective is protezionistico and its adherent is a protezionista. The term appears in political and trade discussions; the plural protezionismi is rare but grammatically regular.
