rana

frog

noun RAH-nah Rare

Origin: From Latin rana (frog).

Usage Note

Rana is feminine: la rana, plural le rane. In Italian cuisine, cosce di rana (frog's legs) are a traditional dish, especially in Lombardy and Piedmont. In swimming, nuotare a rana means 'to swim breaststroke' — literally 'to swim like a frog'. Do not confuse with il ranocchio (small frog/toad, diminutive) or rospo (toad).

Examples

"Una rana verde saltò nello stagno."

Natural Translation

A green frog jumped into the pond.
