Usage Note
Realizzare is a partial false friend: it primarily means 'to carry out' or 'to achieve' (realizzare un sogno = to fulfil a dream), not simply 'to become aware of'. The sense 'to realize' (become conscious) exists but is secondary; rendersi conto is the more common phrase for that meaning. It uses avere as its auxiliary.
