Riconosciuto is the past participle of riconoscere used as an adjective. It can mean 'identified' (il colpevole riconosciuto) or 'officially acknowledged' (un esperto riconosciuto a livello internazionale). In legal Italian, figlio riconosciuto means a child who has been formally acknowledged by a parent. Agrees in gender and number: riconosciuta, riconosciuti, riconosciute.
